Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
A year in sports right at your fingertips! This amazing almanac -- created by the folks at Sports Illustrated magazine -- details the season's sporting events from fall 2002 through summer 2003. Loaded with facts on 12 different sports along with a Summer Olympics Preview and a Sports Directory, the book brings together overviews of the season, season standings, team and player stats, timelines, game leaders, and much more. If you're looking for today's stars in men's soccer, this winning book provides a sidebar detailing the sport's top players along with a trivia challenge question, while anyone interested in finding out all-time results for surfing champs can look them up in a flash. And to make this book seriously top-notch, SI has also included a full-color photo section showing the big sports moments of the year. With so much information, this almanac is an essential pick for any sports fan out there.

Includes the following sections:

  • Football
  • Baseball
  • Basketball
  • Hockey
  • Soccer
  • Action Sports
  • Golf
  • Motor Sports
  • Tennis
  • Swimming
  • Track and Field
  • Winter Olympics
  • Summer Olympics Preview
  • Sports Directory
Children's Literature
One consistent topic around schools is sports. Kids love swapping stories about their favorite athletes and teams. But what they enjoy most is trivia — facts, figures, names, and dates — anything to dazzle and confound their friends. Spend anytime around an elementary or middle school and you are sure to hear all sorts of information you never knew. This title could be the perfect companion for the trivia-obsessed young fan. This easy-to-carry paperback is meant to be a preview of sports in 2004, with highlights of the previous year's sporting events. Baseball, football, basketball, hockey and golf are covered here, as are soccer, tennis, swimming and motor sports. Team records and the statistical leaders in various categories are included as well. In addition, there is a preview of the 2004 Summer Olympics. The middle of the book features 18 color photos of famous athletes in action, such as football's Michael Vick, soccer's Ronaldo and motorcross' Ricky Carmichael. Despite its many plusses, this book does have a critical flaw. For many sports, such as baseball and football, the statistics included are from 2002, rather than 2003, making this a less than ideal reference source for young sports fans looking to 2004. 2003, Scholastic, Ages 10 up.
