Overview

Geared to physiatrists and sports medicine physicians, this book is a practical guide to the rehabilitation of sport injuries. It focuses on specific sports and describes a variety of popular sports in sufficient depth so that physicians can confidently diagnose and treat patients injured during each sport. The authors focus on conservative management of injuries, so that physicians can maximize nonsurgical options before resorting to surgery. The book explains the mechanism of each injury and offers strategies for evaluating patients and preparing them to return to play. Numerous illustrations complement the text.

Editorial Reviews

Doody Reviews
Reviewer: Chris A. Klenck, M.D., Pharm.D. (University of Tennessee at Knoxville)
Description: This second edition of an overview of common athletic injuries discusses etiology, diagnosis, and treatment and uniquely organizes the information into sport-specific chapters with several illustrations. It updates the 1994 edition.
Purpose: The purpose is to discuss the most common injuries encountered in specific sports and describe how to diagnose and treat those injuries.
Audience: Healthcare professionals who have a primary interest in sports medicine are the intended audience, and the book is particularly useful for primary practitioners who care for athletes. Several chapters are authored by practitioners with extensive experience in caring for athletes, but the book is somewhat limited in its scope for more advanced sports medicine specialists.
Features: A wide range of topics are explored, starting with preparticipation physical evaluations, sports psychology, and injury prevention and many common sports are covered. The book concludes with discussions about female and elderly athletes. Discussions of common injuries seen in specific sports, such as elbow injuries, are well done with excellent illustrations and treatment recommendations. However, many topics overlapped throughout the book, making quick reference of a particular injury difficult. The title may also mislead readers to believe the book concentrates on rehabilitation of injuries.
Assessment: Overall, this is a good overview of common athletic injuries with respect to diagnosis and treatment. Its organization of material into specific sports may be appealing to readers with interests in a certain sport. However, many topics are repeated throughout the book, and rehabilitation of injuries is not the primary focus as might be suggested by the title.
