Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Douglas B. McKeag, MD, MS (Indiana University School of Medicine)
Description: This is an easy-to-read review of the fundamentals of sports medicine diagnoses and therapies. This is the second edition to the original edition that was published in 1993.
Purpose: The purpose is to convey succinct concepts relevant to sports medicine in a question-and-answer format. The editor's goals of making various topics available and understandable to a wide array of readers are achieved. Young and new contributors are given an opportunity to discuss topical materials in several chapters.
Audience: Sports medicine physicians and fellows will find this book especially helpful. Athletic trainers and other healthcare professionals will also gain insight into many conditions that they commonly see. The contributors and editor are acknowledged leaders in the field of sports medicine.
Features: The book is nicely divided into discrete topics that cover the gamut of athletic medicine. Both general points and specific suggestions are made about particular topics specific to certain sports. Some readers may find the question-and-answer format difficult to use initially for rapid reference. Occasional drawings and figures enhance the text. More figures or examples of material contained in the text would be a welcome addition. Overall, many concepts are discussed in concise language that enhances quick understanding and use by the reader.
Assessment: This newly-revised manual of sports medicine fits nicely into the array of texts that address similar material. Where other books may offer more detail on certain topics, the easy-to-read format of this text makes it ideal for quick reference and portability. The changes in rules, therapies, and clinical studies make this updated book a welcome library addition for the young sports medicine physician or athletic trainer.
