Editorial Reviews

VOYA
Following the current trend of youthful feminist guidebooks for girls, New Moon magazine has introduced its own series intended to give "girls the power to believe in ourselves... to let us just be girls." Teen submissions are periodically highlighted in the "Point of View" segments of each book. The Friendship volume incorporates essays, stories, and poems written by young teens on topics such as friendship and boyfriends. Each book concludes with an extensive bibliography of fiction, nonfiction, Web sites, and organizations to contact for more information. Though the girlpower advice is encouraging, the greater narrative voice is mildly pedantic. The advice and instruction that are the strongest points of the series are too idealistically simple; they belie the complexity and sometimes indignancy expressed in the submitted writings. Regarding team playing, Sports pertly advises, "You can still win big if you and your team keep learning from your mistakes." This series presents a diluted feminism in a postSpice Girl world, precisely for an audience that needs a strong, clear voice. Illus. Biblio. School Library Journal
Gr 4-8-Created by the editors of New Moon magazine and "a group of girls ages ten to fourteen from across the country," this book is part of a new series dealing with topics of interest to young women. It contains quotes from girls about their own experiences, stories, poems, checklists, and advice on specific issues such as "Losing Friends," "Long-Distance Friends," and "How to Make New Friends." A list for further reading identifies books with friendship themes, magazines for young women, and Web sites. This title reads very much like an extended magazine article without the gloss; aside from the occasional pale-gray heart, half-moon, or star, there are no illustrations. Purchase it only if New Moon is a favorite in your library.-Linda W. Tilden, Cherry Hill Library, NJ Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.
