Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Kristine N Clark, MS, RCEP (North Carolina State)
Description: This handbook provides a condensed review of the impact of nutrition on physical performance. The information is complemented by expert commentary on important questions/topics as well as case studies of various athletes.
Purpose: This book is intended to provide an up-to-date handbook on sports nutrition for coaches, sports professionals, and athletes. Coaches and athletes alike continue to look for strategies to create an edge over other athletes. The market of supplements and ergogenic aids continues to grow. This book focuses on sound nutrition strategies, based on the research, to enhance an athlete's physical performance.
Audience: Although the tone of the book indicates it is directed toward an audience working with athletes, such as coaches, trainers, and dieticians, it is written at a level that would be appropriate for the athletes themselves. However, the expert commentary is written at a level more appropriate for the professionals working with athletes.
Features: This book covers three main areas: preparing the athlete for competition, nutrition for the athlete during competition, and practical recommendations for appropriate eating strategies in various situations. The case studies, relating to topics throughout the book, provide a practical example of athletes seeking professional advice on how to improve their diet to improve their performance. The expert comments provide more detailed information on specific topics relating to the chapter, but most of the information in these comments would have been more appropriate and useful within the chapter itself.
Assessment: This book is a great resource for anyone working with athletes. It is a quick reference for a summary of the latest research in the area of sports nutrition and it provides practical recommendations for the sports professional working with athletes. The greatest strength of this book lies in the one or two case studies that accompany almost every chapter.
