Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Kathleen Krahnke
This is the first in a new annual series designed to complement the companion series People in the News. It covers just what the title says, and has a number of features that make it easy to use. First, the articles are in alphabetical sequence according to the person's name. Second, it contains two indexes, one by the athlete's name and the other by sport. Each of these indexes places an asterisk next to the page number to indicate that a black-and-white photo of the person is included, which will be especially handy for readers trying to locate current pictures of a sport figure. As the series cumulates so will the index, which will then include the edition and page number of the entry for the athlete. Each three hundred- to seven hundred-word entry includes the athletes current (through May 1996) activities, place of birth, and important milestones. Each also includes further periodical readings. Attention has been placed on quick reference, with a who's who in current sports that includes writers and broadcasters. Almost a quarter of the four hundred entries are women, and the volume includes some figures in infrequently covered sports, such as archery, softball, fencing, and dog sled racing. This reference work is sure to be used in all library settings and will be a great starting point for writing reports and clarifying information. It is costly but well worth the investment. Index. Photos.
Booknews
Includes biographies on 400 amateur and professional sports stars, coaches, broadcasters and journalists, hall-of-famers, recently deceased, and other sports-related figures. Biographical entries include a description of the person's role in sports in 1995/1996, a concise career summary, and a brief descriptive summary. 75 percent of the entries include a photograph. Two indexes are provided<-->one arranged alphabetically by name and the other by occupation. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
