Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Beverley Fahey
Those who like a visual challenge have found an ideal book. This book presents pairs of photos with picture riddles that look very much alike but with seven differences. Readers must examine each picture in minute detail to locate the subtle changes. The answers to the riddles can always be found within the pictures that are clear and not cluttered. For those who want to step up the challenge, there are 18 butterflies, 9 giraffes, 2 ladybugs, 2 basketballs, one green balloon, and an apple to be found throughout the book's front and back covers. If you truly get stymied (not to mention frustrated) there is a web site listed to help you out. Puzzle lovers will pore over the pages and it helps to have a buddy to aid in solving some of these tricky puzzles. I Spy and Where's Waldo aficionados will gravitate to this one. Busy, colorful photographed scenes constructed with plastic toy animals distinguish this puzzle book. Each spread has facing pages that are almost mirror images, except for seven subtle differences among them, which readers are invited to find. Each scene also presents a riddle, the answer to which is one of the items pictured on the spread. The creative, colorful pictures and the challenge of finding differences and particular items make this book constructive fun for prereading practice as well as sheer entertainment. Children who enjoy Jean Marzollo's "I Spy" series (Scholastic) will like this book, too.

Kirkus Reviews
In an ingenious take on I Spy tales and the like, this collection of brain teasers requires readers to spot seven differences between two photographs. Corresponding to the two-page spreads are clever riddles to solve-the clues to which lie within the photographs. While the overall theme of the challenges is animal related, each spread focuses on a particular wildlife scenario. The spreads have tantalizingly quirky labels that compel readers to take a closer look, such as "In the Bamboo Jungle," which features a bevy of panda and tiger figurines climbing bamboo, or the arctic themed "An Ice Day" depicting a bevy of penguins congregating on a pristine landscape. Kidslabel presents readers with challenging material; many of the differences are delicate nuances that are revealed only through thoughtful study. The photography is crisp and vibrant, offering an engrossing array of landscapes, alternating between extreme close-up, detailed images and equally intriguing sparser layouts. The word riddles also provide a stimulating challenge. However, stymied adults and readers need not despair, as an answer ledger has been included in the end pages. (Picture book. 6-10)
