Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Ellen Welty
Like the other titles in this series ("First Facts: Spotlight on the Continents"), this title has a small map, color photographs and many generalizations. There is a page of Fast Facts about the continent; a nice feature that would have been nicer had the source been attributed. In addition to the glossary at the end of the book, terms in the glossary are also bolded where they appear in the text and defined at the bottom of the appropriate page, another nice feature. Despite these attempts to add credibility to the work, the general lack of editorial quality is a major distraction. There are many oversimplifications in the information that is presented and there are frequent occurrences of sentences beginning with the words ?And' and ?But.' Since children learn proper sentence construction partly from what they read, it's important to provide them with good examples. The target audience for the series is first and second graders, an age group that is sometimes underserved by publishers of reference materials, but this title and the others in the series do not fill the gap very well. At nearly twenty-four dollars for each title in the series, teachers and librarians would be better served by purchasing a subscription to National Geographic or a similar publication. This title is not recommended. Reviewer: Ellen Welty

    Great intro to Africa

Capstone's First Facts series' are known for providing basic information to a target audience of primary-grade elementary students. Large, colorful photos show aspects of life in Africa with maps detailing the countries, landforms, and population density of the continent. Words in bold are defined at the bottom of the page and repeated with pronunciation guide in the glossary. A list of print and internet resources is provided. A solid choice for both young readers and for older readers learning English. Thanks to Puget Sound Council for the review copy.
