Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Ellen Welty
Geared toward first and second grade readers, this title from the "First Facts: Spotlight on the Continents" series features color photographs, small maps and broad generalizations. There is a nice glossary and an index at the end of the book but the website in the bibliography leads readers to a page that has the same information as the book, not to supplemental information. The facts conveyed in the brief text include climate, landforms, geography, plants, animals and lifestyle. At only 24 pages, this title and the others in the series are fairly expensive and not particularly commendable. There is an overall lack of editorial quality in the text, as evidenced by incomplete sentences—"But Australia is the largest island..."— and statements like "Trees grow all over Australia." While young elementary students need reference materials suitable to their developmental level, teachers and librarians would be better served by purchasing a subscription to National Geographic or a similar publication for the library or classroom. The title is not recommended. Reviewer: Ellen Welty
