Children's Literature - Ellen Welty
Aimed at first and second graders, this title in the series "First Facts: Spotlight on the Continents" features a small map, sweeping generalizations and color photographs. At the end of the book is a glossary of content terms which are also defined at the bottom of the pages on which they appear, an index and a short reading list including a website that repeats the information found in the book, instead of adding to it. These attempts to add authority to the text are unsuccessful given the general lack of editorial expertise. There are several instances of sentences that begin with "And" or "But," facts are merely listed without explanation and without proper attribution, and there is a pervasive oversimplification of all the information provided. Since children learn from the examples they encounter in their own reading, this carelessness is troubling. Equally troubling is the fairly hefty price of each volume in this series. At nearly $24 a title, teachers and librarians would do better to purchase a subscription to National Geographic or a similar magazine to provide accurate geographical information to their students.
