“An unexpected jolt of sudden genius, edgy in its brutally honest, unromanticized depiction of human sexuality.”—New York Post

Spring Awakening is an extraordinary new rock musical with book and lyrics by Steven Sater and music by Grammy Award-nominated recording artist Duncan Sheik. Inspired by Frank Wedekind’s controversial 1891 play about teenage sexuality and society’s efforts to control it, the piece seamlessly merges past and present, underscoring the timelessness of adolescent angst and the universality of human passion.

Steven Sater’s plays include the long-running Carbondale Dreams, Perfect for You, Doll (Rosenthal Prize/Cincinnati Playhouse), Umbrage (Steppenwolf New Play Prize), and a reconceived version of Shakespeare’s Tempest, which played in London.

Duncan Sheik is a singer/songwriter who also collaborated with Sater on the musical The Nightingale. He has composed original music for The Gold Rooms of Nero and for The Public Theater’s Twelfth Night in Central Park.

    I Also Recommend:

    A Marvel

This play is by far a true marvel. Frank Wedekind's original play has been tweaked and updated with songs, and the punk-rock feelings felt during the musical numbers are a great juxposition of the 19th century era the characters are in with the modern times we find ourselves in. The characters are great, the plot if fresh and original, and the song lyrics are a breath of fresh air. This is one of those rare books that can withstand the test of time and still be revelant. I highly recommend it for fans of the musical, fans of the original play, and the any and all people who want a story that can make them think about society and their own moral opinions!
    * On a side note, I also recommend purchasing the soundtrack. It makes the reading expericene that much more enjoyable and unique to listen to the songs as the characters sing them!
**I have selected Frank Wedekind's original play, A hardcover version, and the soundtrack as recommendations to go along with this!

    Powerful

This has to be one of the most powerful things I have ever read. Through every bit of dialogue and lyric, each of the teenagers cry out about how their parents still treat them as children, their confusion through budding sexualities, their confessions, depression, and other topics. This musical was based off of a play of the same name and was originally banned in Germany due to content.

Warning: This book does contain many topics that you may not be used to seeing in plays/books/etc. including suicide, rape, and masturbation. It should not be read by anyone under the age of 14, obviously.

See the musical on tour (since it just closed on Broadway). It's amazing.
