Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
With the help of friendly ants, young readers learn about the plant cycle. The text rhymes and opens with Reed discovering a seed. The ant team then decides that they will try and plant them. Into the dirt the seeds go, but it will take more than Joe saying "Now Grow!" for that process to actually happen. The rain comes and the puddles create quite a diversion for these gardeners. They play in the water, use a leaf as a raft, and even swim. Once the skies clear a beautiful rainbow appears (unfortunately all the colors do not seem to show in their proper order). The rain has helped the seeds sprout and what a gorgeous surprise awaits these gardeners—a very colorful display of spring flowers. While the story is educational, my only misgiving is that impatient kids may not realize that it takes days and weeks for the flowers to sprout from seeds. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
