Overview

Spring training continues to be a time of renewal for baseball, when teams and fans, many from snowy climes, descend on Florida and Arizona to begin the ever hopeful new season. The pace is a little slower, the fans are closer to the action, and the players more accessible: the sport seems to return to its idyllic roots.

Based on the author's visits to each of the 26 current spring training ballparks-17 in Florida and 9 in Arizona-this heavily illustrated reference work provides a detailed description of each ballpark, and some of its history. Next comes the spring training history of the resident major league team(s), along with information about nearby noteworthy sites and attractions. An appendix lists all major league spring training sites from the founding of the Grapefruit League in 1914 through the Washington Nationals' arrival in Viera, Florida, in 2005.

Spring Training Handbook: A Comprehensive Guide to the Ballparks of the Grapefruit and Cactus Leagues

Unlike other spring training books that treat only the topic of the ballparks in Florida OR Arizona, this book covers both. It is much more than merely a travel guide, offering all kinds of history and lore related to the spring training towns in both states. Although I won't be traveling to spring training this year, I will live vicariously through this book.

Spring Training Handbook: A Comprehensive Guide to the Ballparks of the Grapefruit and Cactus Leagues

I just received this book as a gift and am thrilled with it. It contains all kinds of interesting anecdotes and historical information about the spring training towns, ballparks, and teams in Florida and Arizona, as well as tons of practical tips for spring training travelors, ranging from where the best seats are, where to position yourself for autographs before, after or during the games, and where to hang out in each town while visiting. It also contains plenty of pictures of the spring ballparks and players. This is a terrific read for snowbound fans waiting for the season to arrive, and also for fans able to travel to Arizona and Florida to soak up some sun.
