Description: This review covers the information that nurses need to obtain medical-surgical certification. Each chapter covers a different body system, detailing the nursing history and physical assessment. Select disorders are covered with a focus on description, signs and symptoms, and diagnosis and treatment.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a "foundation for examination review and preparation." The book meets this objective since it has the necessary information to assist nurses to prepare for certification. This is a worthy objective since certification is valued and, in some healthcare institutions, is required as a measure of clinical competence.
Audience: The review is written for nurses who desire certification from the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Medical Surgical Nurse. It is also useful for preparation for the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses certification. The contributors and collaborators are experts in the field.
Features: The information is arranged around body system with overall history and physical assessment initially discussed. General signs and treatment are covered in relation to the system. Then the most common disorders in each system are discussed, with an emphasis on major points. Tables and charts highlight information. After each chapter pop quizzes test understanding with rationales for the correct answers. The book ends with a post test.
Assessment: This is an excellent resource to use in preparing for medical-surgical certification. The latest and most current information is included in this fourth edition. I would recommend this review for certification preparation.
