Broach and Doerrfeld wrap up their series of seasonal board books that feature a strawberry blonde baby making the most of her day, no matter the time of year. As the girl dons her rain boots and heads outdoors with her puppy, a series of flaps reveals animals (and sound effects) on each page: “Rainbow baby/ Look! The sun!/ Meadow baby/ Ducklings run/ Quack! Quack!” Broach’s tight-as-a-drum verse and Doerrfeld’s cheerful artwork easily match the enthusiasm of their young backyard explorer. Up to age 3. "[A] cheerful ode to the wonders of spring...This joyful lift-the-flap adventure will inspire little ones to head outdoors to see if spring has sprung in their neck of the woods."—Kirkus Reviews

Kirkus Reviews

Broach rounds out her celebration of the seasons (Seashore Baby, 2010; Snowflake Baby, 2011; Barnyard Baby, 2013) with this cheerful ode to the wonders of spring. This time, the winsome toddler, still accompanied only by her little brown puppy, puts on her rain boots and eagerly heads out the door into the drizzly spring day. She makes mud pies, plays in puddles and discovers some wildlife: ducklings in the meadow, baby birds in the rose bushes and bumblebees in the flower beds. When she finally heads back inside, it's to take a much-needed bath and drift off to sleep with her pup snuggled in beside her. The right-hand pages feature strategically placed flaps that reveal a key part of each pastel-steeped scene. The tiny adventurer is as adorable as ever, but the spare verse is not quite as nimble and elegant here as in the other titles—take, for example, "Mud pie baby / Messy hand // Puddle baby / Stomp and stand." Nonetheless, fans of the previous volumes will certainly want this one to complete the set. This joyful lift-the-flap adventure will inspire little ones to head outdoors to see if spring has sprung in their neck of the woods. Springtime Baby by Elise Broach is an absolutely delightful board book for children. The story takes children on a baby's fun-filled spring day, making mud pies, puddle jumping, smelling flowers, and meeting up with all types of springtime pals. The illustrations are amazing and very detailed so you can spend a lot of time showing a child different things in each picture. The text is simple, the timing is great, and it's a nice read-aloud story.

The book is thick and there are seven flaps that lift with more beautiful illustrations. The flaps lift easily and they are sturdy so there's no worry about wearing off after extended use. There's a surprise under each flap! The age for this book is listed at 0-3 but older children will enjoy it as well. My six-year-old granddaughter loves it and the text is easy so she can read it on her own. She loves the flaps. I think the author or publisher has the age listed a bit low. While it's a nice read-aloud book for toddlers, older children will enjoy is equally as much.

The only disappointment is that there is no "About the Author" anywhere on the book and after I finished reading it I did want to know more about such a creative person. It is a book that can be enjoyed over and over again without growing tired of it. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a children's book that isn't only adorable, but educational as well.
