Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 4–7—In this sequel to It's Raining Cupcakes (S & S, 2010), Isabel has won a baking contest and now it is her BFF's turn to make her dream of becoming an actress come true. The only problem is that the TV commercial Sophie's been offered is for Beatrice's Brownies, the rival bakery to Isabel's family's shop. When she has to choose between her big break and her best friend, she stalls by lying. The story is told in a similar style to the first book with chapter headings named after favorite treats. Sophie is a likable girl who cares very much about her friends. However, as in the previous story, supporting characters lack depth, including Isabel. Sophie's creative solutions to her problems are realistically kidlike, and the happy ending will give readers the warm and fuzzies, as will the included recipes.—Terry Ann Lawler, Phoenix Public Library, AZ
Children's Literature - Elisabeth Greenberg
Sophie, avid about acting, is also an original and creative girl. If a reader gets nothing else but the idea of a pick-me-up list when in a turmoil of emotions, this book is one to grow on...which the sugar-filled desserts which provide the image for the book are not. On the other hand, what middle schooler isn't more interested in snack and dessert than lunch? Sophie's turmoil turns on her first modeling job, to model for a franchise that will be in direct competition with her best friend's mother's wonderful, but not yet successful, cupcake shop. First Sophie tries to not take the job, then with the advice of family and friends she decides she will, and then she tries to hide the nature of the job from Sophie. Meanwhile she builds rewarding friendships with an unlikely nerd and actually finds him a new guy friend, develops her girly friendships with acting friends, and finally comes clean to best friend Isabel, a budding chef who's discovered her own new friend at a cooking competition in New York City. Sophie discovers that her best friend Isabel really is a BEST friend, who wants Sophie to be a star just as much as Sophie wants Isabel to follow her dreams. This froth of a book is keyed directly to young girls and their sometimes confusing relationships with each other. It may help them to navigate some of the perils of friendship while enjoying an escape into sweetness. Reviewer: Elisabeth Greenberg
Kirkus Reviews

Twelve-year-old Sophie faces a difficult dilemma; deciding between loyalty to her best friend and seizing the opportunity of a life time.

An aspiring actress, Sophie's upcoming audition for a commercial may be the big break she has been waiting for. When she discovers the commercial is for the rival of her best friend's faltering family business, Sophie experiences a crisis of conscience. In this sequel to It's Raining Cupcakes (2010), Schroeder delves into the complexity of middle-school friendships. Sophie struggles with a confusing kaleidoscope of feelings, including her jealousy over Isabel's chance to compete in a bake-off and her elation/guilt over the audition. Sophie and Isabel's friendship is jeopardized when Sophie's impulsive decision to lie is revealed. With the help of her new friend Dennis, Sophie may be able to achieve her dreams and salvage her friendship with Isabel. While there are the many references to A Bridge to Terabithia in a potentially intriguing subplot, its story line is not fully developed, and the connection may be too ambiguous for readers unfamiliar with the classic tale.

Schroeder skillfully evokes the turbulence of pre-adolescence as she explores the delicate balance of being a true friend while remaining true to yourself. (Fiction. 8-12)

Friendship or hardship? The book Sprinkles and Secrets by Lisa

    Friendship or hardship?

The book Sprinkles and Secrets by Lisa Schroeder is a book filled with surprises and suspense. Lisa Schroeder tells the story of two girls who are best friends and have different passions. Isabel is interested in baking while Sophie likes acting. Isabel helps her mom at their cupcakes shop, It’s Raining Cupcakes. The business is going slow for her family since a new brownie shop, Beatrice’s Brownies opened up. On the other hand Sophie has found herself an agent to kick off her acting career. Her agent recommends that she auditions for a commercial for Beatrice’s Brownies. Sophie is torn between two paths and doesn’t know which one she should choose. Should she start off her acting career by hurting a friend?

I recommend this book for people who enjoy realistic fiction stories, friendship, and suspense. This is the second book in the series. The first book is, It’s Raining Cupcakes, by Lisa Schroeder. Both books were wonderful. I recommend that you read both books in the series.

I loved the book Sprinkles and Sercrets. I couldn't put it down. I just don't understand why Sophie lied to her friend. There was some spelling mistakes like eupeakes which meant cupcakes. I enjoyed the story and I hope you will enjoy it to.

    Amazing Book

This book is a must read all of the conections to the other book make you want to look back and read the first book all over again! I read the first book when a friend recommended it to me, I loved it! I just recommended this book to her and she loved it, I was so intwined into this book I read it in one night and finished the first book again the following night to help me understand the second book a little more but also have a mind refresh, I would deffinetly read both of the books over and over again! You need to read the first to understand the second, when I finished the first I could not wait for the second to come out, but it was so worth the wait, hope she makes another one! Wish I could give it way more stars! It is definetly worth the money! Offer your parents to pay for it and they will get all mushy and say that they will pay for it my parents did at least but they also luv me more than stars in the sky and I love them back! Anyway just save up your money show them that you have the money and just maybe they will pay for it but either way you will still have the book!
