Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 4–6—Mitchell has done the secret world of espionage justice with these titles. Filled with illustrations, facts, and true tales, the books cover everything students would want to know about a spy's life. Lies offers a primer on a few of the most famous spies in history. Codes discusses the brilliant ways in which people have disguised messages. Gizmos looks at spy rings, cameras, the Kiss of Death, and cell-phone tracking. Traitors begins with Benedict Arnold and Mata Hari and comes to the present day with Robert Hanssen. Each book has a page about a spy career associated with its topic and includes educational requirements, salary ranges, and a section of resources for more information. Sidebars with more information and extra stories and photos are peppered throughout the volumes. Easy-to-read, informative titles.—Lia Carruthers, Roxbury Public Library, Succasunna, NJ
Children's Literature - Greg M. Romaneck
If you have ever seen a spy movie you can conjure up images of amazing gadgets, weapons, and vehicles that daring spies use in media renditions of actual espionage. In reality, while some aspects of this genre of film are exaggerated, there are elements of gadgetry that are part and parcel of spying. In this chapter of the illustrated series "The Secret World of Spies" writer Susan K. Mitchell addresses some of the more fanciful gadgets and gizmos that spies have used or tested. For example, Mitchell describes efforts made by spy agencies to develop robotic dragonflies, fish, and other creatures all in the pursuit of intelligence gathering. Mitchell also writes about micro-cameras, escape vehicles, and miniature guns all of which have been successfully utilized by spies. Mitchell also addresses electronic eavesdropping in a way that is revealing. Perhaps one of the most interesting spy stories that Mitchell shares involved the Soviet's successful bugging of the US Embassy in Moscow. In that instance, a large carved eagle crest made by youngsters from a Soviet school was presented to American diplomats. Cleverly hidden bugs allowed the Soviets to effectively monitor a wide range of conversations in the embassy for over six years before the listening devices were finally discovered. This type of anecdotal approach helps make Spy Gizmos and Gadgets a very engaging book and one that will appeal to younger readers. Reviewer: Greg M. Romaneck
