    Stay at square one!

This is the most basic chess book I have ever seen. Far too basic even for children as its oversized pages and diagrams lack the colorful illustrations of other children's books and the contents are presented in a boring manner. There is, in all, very little material covered within the large pages of this book. Look at one of the many other children's chess books or even a book such as "Chess for Everyone" (very complete and easy to read) or "Learn Chess" (the one written by Alexander & Beach).

    A bit too basic!

This book with over-sized pages will get you started with moving the pieces and showing you the rules you need to know to play a game of chess. But why waist your time and spend the money on a book that will not take you very far when there are plenty of books that not only introduce the most basic rules but give you a solid foundation of strategy? I cannot really recommend this book for any beginner for this reason.

    Fair Beginner's Book.

Square One is a good book for those new to the game but is not a comprehensive treatment of the fundamental concepts of chess. This book is fine if you want to play chess for fun. But if you're on a mission to become an International Grandmaster (or any other serious chess endeavor)then you need to pass this one by in favor of Lev Alber's Comprehensive Chess Course, Vol. 1 and 2. The difference is Pandolfini gets you playing faster than Albert but leaves you somewhat short on basic theory, the curse of American chess players since the founding of The Soviet School of chess. Albert uses the old Soviet system and makes the beginner work about as hard as you can if you're a beginner. If you don't want extreme hard work then Pandolfini's book is fine. But don't expect to keep up with those who used Albert's books. My suggestion is that you buy all three. Use Albert's books (these can be found on Barnes & Noble.com) as your main indtroduction to chess. Use Pandolfini as additional reading. If you are super serious about learning to play chess really well then you need all three books plus lessons from one or both authors. I didn't learn from a book but found that my USCF rating jumped 450 rating points after reviewing all three books. After chess lessons my USCF rating jumped into middle USCF master (2339). Chess is a simple game to learn but a difficult one to master. You'll find these aren't the only three books you need as a beginner. Special note. Age is not a factor, here. Both Pandolfini and Albert are suitable for everyone from very young children to adults. Good book but can't give it more than three stars because of the Albert books. Since this is a review of a beginner's book I'll keep my titles I enjoyed to beginner's books.

This is where all would-be chess players should start!

When I began to learn to play chess, I decided that I wanted a book that would teach me the rules of the game so that I would have as solid a foundation as possible. Square One is exactly what I was looking for in an instructional book. There is no ambiguity. Mr. Pandolfini makes learning the rules and ins and outs of chess fun and exciting with good humor. If you're interested in learning, this is the book for you.
