Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
A lonely mouse sets out to find a playmate, but the animals that he encounters enjoy games that do not interest him--the bee likes ``Buzz-a-lot''; the dog suggests ``Woof-a-lot''; the chicken prefers ``Cluck-a-lot''; and the big cat scares him away with a loud ``Wham! Bam! Scram!'' But in the long grass, the mouse hears the familiar ``Squeak!'' of other mice, and he proceeds to teach them the games that he learned from the other animals. Coming from their own small mouths, these various sounds suit the mice just fine--in fact, they like them ``a lot.'' Children will display less enthusiasm for Waddell's ( We Love Them ; The Park in the Dark ) humdrum story. Also disappointing are Miller's rudimentary illustrations--their drab colors rob the pages of sparkle. Ages 3-up. ( May )

PreS-Gr 1-- A bored, lonely little mouse goes out in search of friends, but a bee wants to play ``Buzz-a-lot,'' the dog wants to play ``Woof-a-lot,'' the chicken wants to play ``Cluck-a-lot,'' and the cat wants to play ``WHAM! BAM! SCRAM!'' The harrassed mouse goes off by himself to play ``Squeak-a-lot,'' and the familiar sound attracts a group of (mice) playmates. After the furry friends exhaust themselves imitating the games the mouse has observed, they engage in ``Sleep-a-lot.'' Although far from a literary masterpiece, this will be high on the child-appeal scale. Youngsters will certainly relate to the idea of searching for compatible friends, and will delight in the animal noises, word play, and visual humor. The simple, understated text borders on the mundane, but is suitable for beginning readers. Like the story, the lively double-page line-and-wash pictures are not of the highest artistic caliber, but are sure to entertain children. Not a necessary purchase, but a fun romp. --Heide Piehler, Shorewood Public Library, WI
