Mrs. Pig entices her three bath-phobic children into the tub with bubbles and toy ducks and "splooshes" (" `Please sploosh ME!' says Piglet Two"). In fact, she's so successful that she catches them "sneak, sneak, sneaking" out after bedtime with the aim of getting so dirty that they'll need two baths in one night. McQuillan (The Get Well Soon Book) works in large simple shapes and cheery colors; the strokes of her paintbrush create a subtle woven pattern for extra visual interest. She has a field day with her characters' rosy plumpness the sight of Mrs. Pig trudging off to the bathroom with her piglets tucked under her arms is certain to elicit giggles. Departing from the somber theme of A Ladder to the Stars, Puttock's prose favors brisk, rollicking rhythms, and when the three piglets speak, the squeals are nearly audible. Ages 3-7. (Apr.) Splish! Splash! Squeal! Three little piggies don't want to take a bath! Mama, however, knows that by tossing in some bubble bath, three rubber ducks and making everything splishy, splashy, sploshy that even her dirty darlings will want to become clean. Preschoolers will laugh at the piggies' antics, as they first cover themselves in paint and dirt and then coat themselves in water and bubbles. This could be bundled with other three-pig books or bedtime stories (maybe even with some bubbles for blowing) for a library story hour. Librarians enjoy and point out the end papers when they are teaching parts of a book. PreS-K-Winsome grins of piglets remind readers of the joys (and challenges) of bathtime as Mama Pig attempts to get her little ones clean. "`And NOW-splishy splashy sploshy'-And she splooshed and she swooshed and galooshed them all over." McQuillan's cartoon illustrations capture a range of emotions: Mama's frustration, the piglets' initial stubborn refusal to cooperate, their outright exuberance in a bubble-filled tub, and a mischievous escape to "get GRUBBY again." Both cover and endpapers leave no question as to the topic of this book. The initial tub illustration leads to pages of pastel blocks with the youngsters and bath toys. While the story isn't new, the spacing of repetitive or sequential text perfectly suits the intended audience. Mama's piglets, like many toddlers, exude both innocence and boundless energy. They don't slow down even after the lights go out. The three little piglets in this rambunctious tale, like most wee ones, have a knack for getting downright filthy. Mama Pig, however, prefers her children when they are clean and smelling fresh. Despite their loud protests, Mama carries her piglets off to a bath. But oh how they squeal and squeak while in the hated tub. Mama gets her brain working and thinks up some creative cures for their unhappiness. First she adds some bubbles and the piglets find them pretty and tickly and loads of fun. Mama Pig has more surprises up her sleeve: she supplies rubber duckies and to top it off " . . . she splooshed and she swooshed and galooshed them all over." And it's a grand time for all. When her piglets are patted dry and snug in beds Mama decides she needs a bit of pampering herself. But she is surprised to find that her bath-time creativity may have backfired and that her piglets have decided that " . . . because baths are the BEST FUN EVER!" hadn't they better hurry and get grubby again. Perfect for bath-time, but great for lap time, Puttock's (A Story for Hippo, 2001, etc.) read is good-humored and filled with bubbly language. Children will revel in the kid-sized cliffhangers as they anticipate the next bath ingredient. McQuillan (Get Well Soon Book, not reviewed) illuminates the story with her brushstroke textures of pudgy cuteness brightened with sparkling colors on silky paper. (Picture book. 3-6)

    We have over one hundred childrens' books. Every night when I ask my sons(ages 5 and 2 1/2) to each pick out a book for bedtime, one of them picks Squeaky Clean. They love to read it again and again.
