Here is a book that is definitely ONLY for the die-hard hard-core S&M aficionado. SS&M (yes, the title is a play on the notorious SS of Nazi Germany) makes one wonder if talented author William Maltese isn't suddenly channeling the Marquis deSade. Maltese, these days known more for his gay novels and gay short-story collections [although he did write extensive hetero pulp fiction (erotica) throughout the sixties and seventies and eighties], and who has a literary track record that honors him with a listing in WHO'S WHO IN AMERICA, if you know where to look for it), certainly surprises with a tale of heterosexual pain, torture, and outright gore that doesn't have a gay guy or gay gal in sight. In the end, the book does have a moral, but I wonder how many people will really have the willpower to maneuver the whole inundation of bloody brutality (even of this relatively thin volume) to get there. Definitely, do not attempt this one on a full stomach. However, as usual, for any fan of Maltese, and I am a fan, it's a real joy to try and figure out just how this bisexual man's marvelous (and obviously far-darker-than-I-ever-realized mind) works.

    Painful, Frightening, Pleasurable

How is it possible? Can a reader be taken to the depths of evil, to places of unspeakable depravity, and yet, mysteriously, unknowingly, also be intrigued, even aroused? Yes, it is possible. Somehow, Mr. Maltese did this to me. Thanks to his skilled hand, I felt the isolation, the horrific atmosphere of imprisonment and interrogation, real because it was real. It is history from the darkest days of human civilization, and I shed tears. But another emotion was just beneath the surface. As I joined these cruel men in their chambers of horror, I was forced to suppress what I could not fathom: eroticism. I experienced stimulation. It frightened me. This author dredged up from the depths of my fantasies what should never be entertained as reality. But these events did happen, and these conflicts of emotions are exactly why this book is a rare commodity. It will scare you. It will make you scared of yourself.
