    The Holy Matchmaker

Saint Anthony of Padua, His Life, Legends, and Devotions, is based on a number of articles published in St. Anthony Messenger magazine. The book’s editor, Jack Wintz, O.F.M., chose and updated the selections and developed new chapters to expand the 2005 edition. In addition to the biographical content, the book addresses legends and popular devotions to St. Anthony as guardian of the mail, holy matchmaker, finder of lost and stolen articles, and other titles. It also offers information on U.S. shrines to St. Anthony and a novena and other prayers in his honor.

Two authors, Jack Wintz and Carol Ann Morrow, recount pilgrimages following the footsteps of St. Anthony. In 2010, Wintz visited four key shrines in Lisbon, Portugal. He journeyed to the sites where Fernando Bulhom (St. Anthony’s birth name) was born, baptized, and spent several years as an Augustinian friar and priest. Wintz closes the section with Fernando’s joining the Franciscans and sailing with a group of friars to Portugal under his new name, Anthony.

In 2000, Morrow made a longer pilgrimage to the area. Her account features details of modern Portugal, which she frequently contrasts with the twelfth-century version. She provides a vivid description of the church at St. Anthony’s birthplace: petitions tucked into the frame of a painting of the saint and flowers “crammed in generous bouquets in a pail in front of this image.” Morrow also covers Anthony’s visits to Rome, his preaching and teaching, and his deep connection with Francis of Assisi. Visiting the Basilica of St. Anthony, the author was moved by the mementos near Anthony’s relics: a leg brace, a soccer ball, fresh flowers; and silver and gold images of limbs, lungs, and torsos. “They are brought to the tomb in fulfillment of a promise (vow) made in return for the saint’s able assistance,” she writes.
