Overview

The first full-scale account of Joseph Stalin's personal vendetta against Soviet Jews. Drawing on newly opened archives and on his own experiences in the USSR of the early 1950s, the investigative journalist-lawyer Arkady Vaksberg reveals the genesis and evolution of the Communist leader's malevolent campaign - and the extraordinary cunning and shrewdness of his tactics. He shows us Stalin prosecuting prominent Jews in the notorious trials of the 1930s while appointing Jews as commanders of eleven out of twelve Gulags. We see the "Man of Steel" awarding the Order of Lenin to a celebrated Jew every time he launches a new anti-Semitic assault - and choosing a Jew, the infinitely hypocritical and sadistic Lazar Kaganovich, as his protege and chief hatchet-man. All this, while thousands of innocent Jewish men and women across the Soviet Union are being stripped of their jobs and property . . . arbitrarily arrested . . . summarily shot. Vaksberg also tells of the trumped-up trial of Soviet Jewish diplomats that was ultimately abandoned after Hitler's invasion; the curious life, and death, of the Jewish Antifascist Committee; the state-ordered murder of the great actor-director Solomon Mikhoels; the plan to deport the entire Soviet Jewish population to Siberia; how Ilya Ehrenburg finally abandoned his role as a "house Jew" and dared to criticize Stalin's policies; and the infamous "Doctor's Plot" just before the dictator's death. A fascinating, richly documented, and profoundly shocking work of twentieth-century history.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Using newly declassified material, Russian journalist Vaksberg traces the effects of Stalin's fanatical anti-Semitism. (Mar.)
Library Journal
Stalin publicly espoused Marxism's international ideology by championing Russia's Jews but, behind the scenes, anti-Semitism ruled his plots for their destruction. Vaksberg ( The Prosecutor: Andrei Vyshinsky and the Moscow Show Trials , LJ 2/1/91) has delved into recently opened public records to reveal new information, including the possibility that Stalin's schemes against the Jews began earlier than previously thought. This work covers much the same territory as Louis Rapoport's Stalin's War Against the Jews ( LJ 9/1/90). Both examine Stalin's early writing on the ``national question,'' the purges of the 1930s, the rise of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee, the murder of Jewish leader Solomon Mikhoels, and the Doctor's Plot. Rapoport's lacked some of Vaksberg's sources, but his work is more carefully documented. Vaksberg's readable study is recommended for larger collections.-- Rena Fowler, Humboldt State Univ., Arcata, Cal .

A raggedly organized inquiry into cases of anti-Semitism during the tyrant's last years, this title concentrates on three notorious incidents: the 1948 murder of the director of the Moscow Yiddish Theatre, Solomon Mikhoels; the execution of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee in 1952; and the "doctors' plot" of 1953, a fabricated prelude to a dread new cycle of purges cut short only by Stalin's own death. Clearly, all three cases were straws in a stronger wind of pathological xenophobia and suspicion, distilled in agitprop inveighing of the day against "rootless cosmopolitans." But Vaksberg (biographer of Stalinist lackey Vyshinsky in "Stalin's Prosecutor" [1991]) magnifies the straws, albeit with damning evidence from recently disclosed documents, a bit out of proportion from the prevailing patter of ill winds. Yes, there is a place for dwelling on the fates of figures of Jewish backgrounds working in the secret police or cultural spheres, namely a place in minds long steeped in the times' history and its anti-Semitic footnote; the fact is "mature" Stalinism's evenhanded trait was the persecution of every Soviet nation and religion. That caveat aside, the recrudescence of anti-Jewish feelings in Russia remind us that the cases that Vaksberg investigated weren't wholly peculiar to their context. For specialty interests

Typical malicious slanders against the liberator of the Jews

Whose Red Army freed the survivors of Hitler's death-camps? Whose Red Army defeated the most murderous anti-Semite of all time? Whose Red Army smashed 70% of Hitlers' army? The Red Army liberated Poland from the Nazi mass-murderers, freeing the Jews from Treblinka. Lazar Kaganovich, a Jew, was Stalin's deputy for years. Maxim Litvinov, a Jew, was his Foreign Minister for years. Stalin fought for his country, uniting all who could be united against the common capitalist foe. He fought against all those who opposed Soviet rule and tried to restore capitalism, whether they were Jewish, Muslim, Christian, atheist or Buddhist. The working class movement has always opposed any from of discrimination based on religion or 'race' (a nonsense term anyway). Empires and capitalists have always used 'divide and rule'; workers have always sought to 'unite and liberate'.
