    Why Joseph Stalin the brutal dictator of Soviet Russia was not eventually executed for his incompetency the first 10 days of the war on the Eastern Front can only be attributed to the fear this man instilled in the Russian people. His refusal to realize an attack was imminent, and his callousness in sending brave Russian troops into an abyss with no hope of support or rescue is one of the great tragedies of WWII which had so many. A great but depressing read for those interested in why the Russian people suffered so much during WWII.

    Overdue

    Mr. Pleshakov's book fills a gap in WW2 literature in telling the 'inside' view of the Soviet military debacle in the summer of 1941. His protraits of famous Soviet figures like Zhukov, Timoshenko, Rokossovski and lesser known but important figures and their interaction with the Stalin and Soviet political environment are fascinating. Mr. Pleshakov definitely has the Russian ability to tell a gripping story without 'flogging the dog.' This is one that's hard to put down.
