Children's Literature - Anita Barnes Lowen
Jamie moved from the city to live in Dinosaur Cove. While hunting for fossils in the crumbling cliffs along the beach, Jamie and his new friend, Tom, discovered an amazing secret—a world filled with real, live dinosaurs. The boys have had many adventures in this prehistoric world; this time, Dino World is threatened by meteors. A falling meteorite has set the jungle home of the Edmonotosaurus on fire. "Suddenly, a flaming tree trunk crashed down, hitting the ground in a shower of sparks. With a terrified bellow, the herd reared away and began to run from the burning trees." It is a stampede, and the terrified dinosaurs are thundering right toward the bottomless pit blasted into the ground by another meteorite. If the boys cannot stop them or turn them away, the Eddies are doomed: "The stampeding herd was only yards away. Was it too late? Or were they all going to plunge into the crater?" This sixth book from the "Dinosaur Cove" series will appeal to boys who like adventure and dinosaurs as well as a quick and easy read. This book is illustrated with black and white drawings. A glossary and a map of Dinosaur World are included. Check out Scholastic's website (www.scholastic.com/dinosaurcove) for games, facts, a map, and dinosaur posters kids can print out and color. My son loves these books....we can never read just a couple chapters at a time...we need to read the whole book at once. I don't think they can publish them quick enough. We waited two months for this #6 book and we read it in 30 minutes...now we're waiting for July 1st for #7 (My son has the date marked on his calendar). These books are very appealing to young readers who enjoy adventure and, of course, dinosaurs. It does stimulate imagination....we live on the coast and when we are at the beach we pretend it might be Dinosaur Cove! If there was only one thing I would suggest...they don't always indicate the pronunciation of the dinosaur names. (I still don't know how to say quetzalcoatlus)....
