School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 5-9-- Interesting, informative, and easy to read, these guides for beginning hobbyists also serve as fine introductions to their subjects. Stamps provides a historical perspective along with the necessary equipment, instructions in what to look for and how to care for collections, and stamp maps. While the book is well designed and accurate, its coverage is not as complete as Brenda Lewis's Stamps! (Dutton, 1991). Birdwatching covers equipment, ways to attract and observe birds, tips for identifying different species, their characteristics and types, and ways for enthusiasts to advance their skills. Both books have full-color photographs and illustrations on every page and special boxed ``hints'' throughout the texts. Topics are limited to two to four pages. Layouts are pleasing, and all of the artwork is clearly labeled. --Janice C. Hayes, Middle Tennessee State University, Murfreesboro
