It's just another day on Calamity Avenue. Stan Hankie and his friends are playing baseball, when the ball - their last one - falls into the sewer drain. Everyone knows that there's a monster in the sewers. Stan and his best friend, Larry, go down in search of the ball, anyway. But instead of a baseball, they find something else. Then strange things start happening around town. Is a creature from the sewers coming after them? Can Stan and Larry figure out what's going on before the whole town is destroyed.

It's bad enough when Fluffy, Stan's pet chameleon, accidentally gets flushed down the toilet. Things get worse when Stan and his friends go to play baseball and their ball has to be retrieved from the sewer. Stan and Larry volunteer to go get it, but instead of coming up with the ball, they emerge with a slimy, smelly lump that turns out to be coated in a mad scientist's growth formula. Fluffy, meanwhile, has encountered this compound and grown gigantic, and when she comes up from the sewer mayhem ensues. She lumbers about, leaving destruction in her wake, and finally climbs up to the roof of the elementary school. Stan and Larry, and Stan's vicious dog, Mr. Snuggles, must come to the rescue before the town's volunteer militia shoots her down and destroys the school. Black-and-white line drawings illustrate the messy, smelly action; the drawing are not very elaborate or sophisticated, but then again neither is the story. Readers who think fart jokes, belches and mentions of wet underwear are endlessly funny are the natural audience for this silly and rather crude adventure. It's likely to appeal to fans of Dav Pilkey and Jeff Kinney. Reviewer: Paula Rohrlick

Gr 3–5—Stan is a normal kid with a dog; a pet chameleon; and a best friend, Larry. But one day things start to go wrong. His dog flushes Fluffy down the toilet, his last baseball rolls down the sewer grate, and the neighborhood game stops while Stan and Larry climb down to get it. They return with a round, slimy object that's definitely not a baseball, so they take it to the neighborhood mad scientist, who knows what it is and tries to steal it. Everyone has heard there's a monster in the sewer, and Dr. Rrhea reveals that he's poured some failed Brussels-sprout growth formula into it. Put together a flushed chameleon and growth formula and what happens next isn't hard to guess. Readers do see Fluffy again, but she's on the attack, 20 times bigger and looking for her egg. Shreve's plot and cartoon line drawings, which appear on every page, hold the ingredients for a funny, lively story, but the characters, young and old, seem to dawdle, and the writing lacks the liveliness it needs.—Walter Minkel, Austin Public Library, TX
