Stan Getz's Finest Hour

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - William Pearl
They called Stan Getz "the sound." With a tone on his tenor sax that could charm the birds from the trees, and a sense of swing that could hit with the power of a two-ton truck, Getz was the complete musician. He also covered a wide stylistic range, reflected in the eclectic choices found on this excellent collection. In the single decade covered -1957 to 1967 - Getz ranges wide and far. From mainstream jazz and West Coast swing, and bossa nova to orchestral jazz, big band jaunts and cutting edge post bop, Getz did it all and spectacularly well. Greats work well with each other; among Getz's world class accompanists are bassist Ray Brown; pianists Oscar Peterson, ...

Greats work well with each other; among Getz's world class accompanists are bassist Ray Brown; pianists Oscar Peterson, Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea; drummers Kenny Clarke, Shelly Manne, and Roy Haynes; not to mention the bossa nova triumvirate of Joao Gilberto, Antonio Carlos Jobim, and Astrud Gilberto. It's all golden.
All Music Guide - Heather Phares
Verve's Finest Hour collection of Stan Getz's work compiles 60 minutes of career highlights, including "It Never Entered My Mind," "Desinfinado," "The Girl From Ipanema," and "I Didn't Know What Time It Was." Though it's by no means a definitive compilation of Getz's music, it does provide a breezy overview of some of his best cool jazz and bossa nova moments.
