Barnes & Noble - David McGee
What else do you need to know about Tammy Wynette's STAND BY YOUR MAN beyond the title song, one of the most important country songs ever? The first of the late Wynette's 20 Number One singles, it dropped into a culture in 1968 that was questioning and redefining womens' roles in society and in relationships. And its double-edged advisory "after all, he's just a man" said more than dozens of learned essays of the time ever could. But beyond that, Wynette's performances throughout are remarkable -- at times tender, at times tough, full of pain and passion. And its double-edged advisory "after all, he's just a man" said more than dozens of learned essays of the time ever could. But beyond that, Wynette's performances throughout are remarkable -- at times tender, at times tough, full of pain and passion. Producer Billy Sherrill, who would reconfigure the Nashville Sound for the '70s as surely as Owen Bradley and Chet Atkins had done in their day, matches the Wynette's emotional sweep to panoramic string-laden arrangements worthy of a chicken-fried Phil Spector. Previously unissued bonus tracks include "I'm Only a Woman" and "There's Quite a Difference." This one packs a potent punch.
All Music Guide - Greg Adams
"Stand by Your Man" became a number one C&W hit as well as Tammy Wynette's signature song, and the album that shares its name topped the C&W album chart and crossed over to the pop chart, achieving platinum sales status along the way. Others in the music industry must have been paying attention, considering that two album tracks, "I Stayed Long Enough" written by Wynette and "Forever Yours," soon became hits for Billie Jo Spears and Dottie West respectively. Unlike Wynette's previous album, D-I-V-O-R-C-E, Stand by Your Man does not rely heavily on material associated with other artists, the most notable exception being a recording of Webb Pierce's 1957 hit "It's My Way." Although the result is a consistent album by '60s standards, the commercial importance of Stand by Your Man is more significantly tied to the strength of the title track than to its overall quality. Two years after Koch's CD release of Stand by Your Man, Sony Legacy reissued it with bonus tracks.

This will make you a stand by your Tammy fan!

Be prepared. This cd will change your (musical) life. First off, you will be exposed to perhaps the most unqiue and emotion filled voice that country music ever offered. Second, you will be moved, not only by that voice, but by the down to earth songs and legendary production values associated with Wynette's music. Lastly, you will crave more. You will, having been exposed to this, her greatest of her earliest recordings, want to hear her sing anything, whether its one of her chart toppers or Three Blind Mice. This is classic country performed by a classic female vocalist. This is a cd which should come with its own warning label - because you WILL get hooked.
