K-Gr 3-Although first-grader Molly Lou Melon is extremely short, has buck teeth you can stack pennies on and a bull-frog voice, and is clumsy, her grandmother keeps reminding her that if she believes in herself, the world will believe in her, too. When Molly Lou's family moves, and she encounters the school bully, Ronald Durkin, she remembers her grandmother's advice. When he calls her "SHRIMPO!" she beats him at football and, full of self-confidence, meets his other taunts with an astounding array of talents. The intricate snowflake she cuts wins Ronald's admiration and his gift of a stacking penny for her teeth. Catrow's pencil and neon-green-tinged watercolor illustrations suit the exuberant, over-the-top quality of the protagonist and text. The book's message, however, may leave readers wondering if the way to deal with a bully is just to be better at everything, which might not be feasible for many children. Judith Caseley's Bully (Greenwillow, 2001) is more realistic. Spunky Molly Lou Melon isn't going to let anything get in her way, including the fact that she is short, clutzy, buck-toothed, and has a voice like a frog. Newcomer Lovell's heroine follows her grandmother's sage wisdom to walk proudly, smile big, sing out, and believe in herself. And Molly has never needed that advice more than when her family moves. At her new school, Molly immediately becomes the target of Ronald Durkin, the bully. But leave it to Molly to transform all her "faults" into marvelous talents that get the best of Ronald Durkin, as hilariously illustrated by Catrow ("Take Me Out of the Bathtub and Other Silly Dilly Songs", p. 499, etc.). His pictures fill the pages with wild perspectives, goofy-looking kids, and hilarious details. Readers will have no trouble imagining themselves a part of the action, and Lovell makes it easy for children to chime in with several repetitive phrases.     Highly Recommend

    I loved this book. I am a grandmother who had to read a book to my grandsons first grade class. He got very upset because a child called him stupid, the week before. My grandson and I chose this book because it was a story between a grandmother and her grand-daughter. The little girl was being bullied by a young boy, when she moved to her new home and went to a new school. The grandmother taught the child to never mind what other children say and that the grand-daughter was perfect the way she was. She listened to her grandmother and everything worked out well. The young boy never bothered her again. The children in the class loved this story because they all related to it.

    100% perfection! A must-be-bought book!

    I am a girl. Like most girls I worry about all my flaws. This book is all about embrassing those flaws and turning them into something beautiful. Molly lou Melon gives kids an extra boost in courage, confidence, and self-asteem.

    Great Children's Book

    As a teacher, I highly recommend this title. It's a great story about a little girl who embraces her differences and stands up to the class bully. She doesn't let anyone get her down. A great story for teaching children acceptance and self-esteem.

    Great gift for baby showers!!

    I LOVE THIS BOOK! I am a neonatal nurse and have given it as a goodbye gift to patients I have taken care of for a long time. It has a tremendous message for all children (and adults) to stay true to yourself and be who you are. Our copy at home is tattered from being read so many times. It is also a great discussion book for parents to use with kids to accept others differences! It is my all time favorite children's book.

    It's a 10 star item.

    This is the book to get and keep. It's not just for kids. It tells you how to live life. I was recommended to get this book by my child's daycare provider and ordered 4 copies the next day for 4 different people.

    Standing Tall No Mater What !

    Stand tall Molly Lou Melom is Very encoraging book about a little girl. That is just taller than her dog. Mollys grandma told her alway walk as proud as you can. Molly had buck teeth that were so big that so could put big stacks of pennies on her teeth. Molly also had Avoice tha souned like a bullfrog being squeezed by a boa constictor. Molly Beleieved in her self but she often had a fumble finger. Soon Molly would be moving to a new town. So, she had to say good bye to her grandma and friends to start at a new school. In her new school, there is a bully who makes fun of Molly for how she looks. Molly shows himthat everyone is different in their own way. There is a good life lesson in this story of how everyone is different. That is what I liked about it. It showes how Molly stands up for her self.

    Outstanding!

    I purchased this book 1.5 years ago for our daughter and we just LOVE everything about it-illustrations, moral, characters, etc. It truly teaches them to 'Believe in Yourself'. I highly recommend this book to everyone- young and old.

    This is a WONDERFUL book!!

    I bought this for my 11 year old daughter years ago. It was one of her favorites, now I read it several times a day to her 20 month old brother. My Grandmother is just like Molly, short,with a scratchy voice. When I read it to her she almost cried. She wished she had had this book when she was young. The illustrations are amazing also. I highly recommend this book.

    Everyone Loves This Book

    What a wonderful book!

    I read this for a graduate level children's literature class for licensure in teaching and it was my FAVORITE out of 80+ books. It's a beautiful story of self-esteem and self-confidence and the illustrations are AMAZING! I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a good book with a powerful message behind it. This would be GREAT for little girls.

    A boost of self!

    Molly Lou Melon is a wonderful character and teaches a wonderful concept of confidence in one's self. A positive book for children as well for all ages. A boost that is needed for ourself as well a reminder. Thank you for publishing this book. :)

    We love Molly Lou!!!

    What a breath of fresh air. My Goddaughter and I love this book. It was the book she learned to read from, and the first she read through all by herself. We have even painted one of 'Grandmother's quotes of wisdom' on her bedroom wall. What a glorious way to instill self assurance and confindence in today's impressionable young children who are struggling to 'fit in'. Thank you for writing such an enlightening children's book.

    Highly recommended !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    This is an excellent book regarding young children and begining a self-esteem at a young age. Be proud of who you are no matter what anyone else says or thinks of you. You will enjoy reading this book to your children. The pictures are wonderful and the book is very funny.
