Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Mary Ann Harlan
The recently released Standards in Action attempts to expand upon AASL's Standards for the 21st Century Learner by providing benchmarks and action examples. The original document was a nine-page brochure that outlined nine common beliefs, four learning standards, four strands, and indicators under each strand. It was an excellent starting point, but the addition of benchmarks at grades two, five, eight, ten, and twelve helps flesh out the original vision. Benchmarks are provided for each indicator within each strand and are specific skills that can be assessed. In Standard 3 (Sharing knowledge and participating ethically) and Standard 4 (pursuing personal and aesthetic growth), rather than benchmarks, there are sample behaviors and stages of development, which can be helpful for both curriculum design and assessment. The action examples might prove more problematic for some teacher librarians. The document is more pragmatic and reflective of current realities in schools than reflective of aspiration and research-based best practices. Action examples include a range of collaboration from none to intensive and reflect a variety of library contexts including fixed, flexible, and combination scheduling. The examples reflect that teaching in the library occurs one-on-one, with small groups, and in front of an entire class. The examples also reflect varying levels of lesson development. They are examples and must be approached in that manner rather than as a cookbook of lessons. School libraries should own a copy of this professional, which has a role within any program.
