Lovely and innocent, Sarah Sloan had never been as entranced by any man as she was by the wounded warrior who was Jim Standing Bear. Blue Angel Naval Commander Jim Standing Bear was living his dream, flying high in the sky in his F/A 18 Hornet and about to marry his beautiful fiancée Bethany. But that all came to a crashing halt on rain slick night when his Jaguar convertible meets an 18-wheeler. Six months later Jim is now in a wheelchair and his fiancee couldn't bear to marry a cripple. Sarah Sloan has brought her father home from Mexico because he is suffering from Alzheimer's and wanted to be closer to her sister as his time is short. Sarah is a caregiver, teacher, dancer, loving sister and daughter. She plays 'Ginger' to her fathers 'Fred Astair' as his memory comes and goes. They dance in the garden below as the broken winged angel above watches them. When Sarah takes a teaching job at a high-risk school she ask Jim to be a mentor to her boys in her class. Working together they not only form a lasting friendship but love begins to bloom. When Sarah is attacked at knifepoint, Jim's legs did something they hadn't done in many months, they walked to save her life. Jim is still very uncertain about his future and can't commit to Sarah. STANDING BEAR'S SURRENDER had me smiling as Sarah danced in the garden in the moonlight just to make her father smile. Jim's struggle to walk at times was heartbreaking but when he finally realizes he can walk but can't fly his jets any more the tears flowed. This is my first book by Ms. Webb, she had me smiling, laughing, and crying at times as Sarah and Jim came to terms with their limitation and the disease that claimed Eric Slogan mind.
