Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Mark R Hutchinson, MD (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: This two-CD set is the premier edition of a new series from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons called Standing Room Only. The primary topic of this presentation is on total knee arthroplasty and ranges from presentations on surgical approaches, to complication prevention and how to deal with complications. It is a unique offering that brings the user to the front row of a hands-on instructional course on total knee arthroplasty
Purpose: The purpose of presenting the material in this format is to allow users to learn the techniques through direct observation of masters via the high quality videos on live and cadaveric specimens. Each segment is narrated by the instructor whose task was to present the topic at an Orthopaedic Learning Center Course. The format allows the user to feel as if he is front and center in the conference, at the dissection lab table, or in the operating room with the elite instructor. These are valued objectives and this format brings this goal home nicely.
Audience: The target audience is surgeons and residents who perform total knee arthroplasty and who want to improve their skills and outcomes. I am confident that if all residents reviewed both CDs, they would be much more astute in the operating room and all surgeons who used it would have improved outcomes via recognition of new pearls and new things to avoid. Each lecture and presentation is provided by leaders in the field of knee reconstructive surgery. Each is valuable and builds on the preceding lecture and presentation.
Features: The series Standing Room Only exposes users to the skills, techniques, and anatomic demonstrations of a national level course. It is like being at the side of the mentor during fellowship or having the front row seat at a surgical demonstration. The authors cover a broad range of knee reconstructive issues from unicompartmental disease, through primary and revision total knee arthroplasty including complications, difficulties and how to avoid them. Since the presenters of each topic vary, the styles of presentation also vary, but overall they are of high quality.
Assessment: I liked the format of the CD-ROMs. For the generalist orthopedist who can not attend a knee society meeting or the latest Orthopaedic Learning Center Course, this is as good as being there. The speakers and presenters are impressive and leaders in the field. I will recommend that our orthopedic department consider investing in the series. This premier edition on total knee arthroplasty is excellent.
