Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Mark R Hutchinson, MD (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: This DVD created by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) in their Standing Room Only Series targets surgical techniques and management of the shoulder and elbow. It easily self loads and runs on most any computer that runs DVDs.
Purpose: The goal of this offering is to provide the user the feeling of being a participant at one of the surgical technique courses offered by AAOS on the shoulder and elbow — but perhaps the course was sold out, thus the concept of standing room only. Each topic is presented nicely in a PowerPoint lecture format including a picture-in-a-picture view of the actual speaker giving his talk. Each of the shoulder topics is followed by a cadaveric instructional video of a master actually performing the procedure. The elbow section has some video within the PowerPoint talk but fails to follow up with didactic video of an actual procedure in each case.
Audience: The target audience includes orthopedic surgeons and orthopedic residents who wish to learn or optimize their surgical skills about the shoulder and elbow. The design of the DVD creates the impression that you actually attend a didactic course offered by the AAOS. The AAOS has established itself as the leader in orthopedic education and this DVD includes a mix of world leaders and up and coming experts in the field of shoulder and elbow surgery. There is clearly an arthroscopic focus in this DVD.
Features: The package includes two DVDs, one focused on the shoulder and one on the elbow. I particularly liked the PowerPoint presentations narrated by the author in a picture-in-a picture format. The designers also should have used this concept with the didactic cases using an external view of a picture-in-a-picture while the main view would continue to be the arthroscopic view. The content is a bit selective to specific shoulder and elbow procedures and is clearly not comprehensive. It also tends to focus on arthroscopic techniques, which makes the title a bit misleading.
Assessment: Overall, I liked this product, especially the PowerPoint presentations narrated by the actual author in a picture-in-a-picture format. The concept of "Standing Room Only" makes these DVDs a good value. Attending the course could cost over $1,000, while these DVDs mimic the key didactics if not the hands-on skills, making it a good value.
