Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
The star of Louis Sachar's novel Holes gives valuable pointers on surviving Camp Green Lake in this insightful and amusing guide. Whether it's recognizing and handling scorpions or digging the perfect hole, Stanley Yelnats has the camp and its residents all figured out. Stanley begins by explaining the system ("Don't expect too much in the way of food or water, or entertainment") and a few essential rules ("Don't complain"), following up with observations on dealing with other kids in D tent, Survival Tests, and a chapter on "X-Ray and the B-Tent Boys." The guide also contains a witty appendix on the histories of Camp Green Lake characters, and with Stanley's matter-of-fact voice telling it like it is, his guide is a winning tool for future "campers" -- and all Holes fans -- to read and memorize, in case a pair of falling shoes happens to get them sent off to dig holes, too. Matt Warner
Publishers Weekly
Fans of Louis Sachar's Holes can bide their time until the movie's premiere by reading Stanley Yelnats' Survival Guide to Camp Green Lake, also by Sachar, illus. by Jeff Newman. "If you're reading this book, chances are you've been convicted of a crime and have been sentenced to the Camp Green Lake Juvenile Correctional Facility.... Maybe you're innocent-more likely not," Stanley states in the voice his followers have come to love. Tips on digging holes, identifying various rattlesnakes and an appendix of who's who in the novel Holes are just some of the highlights in this bible of the Texas desert. B&w drawings bring the dangers to life. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
School Library Journal
Gr 5-7-At the end of Holes (Farrar, 1998), Camp Green Lake seemed destined to become a Girl Scout camp. However, as Stanley explains, the award-winning book caught the attention of get-tough politicians who liked the notion of hard work and discipline. So, they reopened the infamous juvenile-detention center, rehired the malicious staff, and, of course, reinstituted the hole-digging regimen. As a camp survivor, Stanley tries to provide new inmates with the vital information they will need to endure their sentences-including a discussion of how the system works, hole-construction techniques, and desert wildlife dangers. He enhances his account with anecdotes about his former campmates, elaborating on incidents and characters from Holes. The book is written in pop survival-manual style and even includes sample situations and survival questions, although the answers are often quite unexpected. Familiarity with the original book is essential to appreciating this highly unusual sequel, which both explains and extends the adventure.-Elaine E. Knight, Lincoln Elementary Schools, IL Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

    Chris's thoughts!

I thought HOLES was a great Book. It was a good book because Stanley Yelnats has his first name spelled back wards as his last name! Also I liked it because, I loved how much he was friends with Zero and he went into the desert and took the whole water truck!

if you though holes was good then you will like this book

this book is about what to do and what not to do when you are at Camp Green Lake. stanley just tells about people after Holes and tells you a little more about them, kind of like a profile about that person. i liked this book because it helped me understand the stuff i didn't understand when i read holes. i reacommend reading holes before this book but you could read this book and still understand it too. the author outs a lot of things in here i wouldnt have though of on my own. it taught me to follow my own path and become independent.
