Star Kitty's Revenge [Explicit Lyrics]

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Tracy E. Hopkins
In the liner notes for Star Kitty's Revenge, underground funk and soul diva Joi -- former Lucy Pearl frontwoman and wife of Goodie Mob's Big Gipp -- writes: "This album is dedicated to any body who discovered that there is a power and beauty and courage when change occurs from the inside, and effects those on the outside." That change is all over Star Kitty's Revenge, the metamorphic black butterfly's gutsy bid for mainstream acceptance. Before Erykah Badu and Macy Gray, Joi made a name for herself in the music industry with her imaginative, funk/rock/soul-splicing debut, 1994's The Pendulum Vibe and its groundbreaking -- if ill-fated -- follow-up, 1996's Amoeba ...

Before Erykah Badu and Macy Gray, Joi made a name for herself in the music industry with her imaginative, funk/rock/soul-splicing debut, 1994's The Pendulum Vibe and its groundbreaking -- if ill-fated -- follow-up, 1996's Amoeba Cleansing Syndrome. EMI folded before it was released. But with the money-minting production of Austin, Raphael Saadiq, Organized Noize's Sleepy Brown, and others behind her, Joi -- or at least her alter ego, Star Kitty -- is finally right on time. Rather than crimp her offbeat style to fit into today's neo-soul climate, she embraces the cosmic funk of hip-hoppers OutKast and Goodie Mob. There are a few radio-friendly R&B grooves, such as the Austin-produced "Missing You," but frenetic, profanity-filled sonic excursions such as "Techno Pimp" are more her style. Joi's potty-mouth takes her off course on yet another cat-fight anthem, "You're a Whore," but she redeems herself with the poignant ode to a prostitute, "Nicole." In fact, the Atlanta vixen's star shines brightest when she's waxing poetic about love and self-empowerment -- as on the funk-meets-opera reworking of Bootsy Collins' "Munchies for Your Love," featuring her boo Big Gipp, and her dead-on, rock-tinged remake of Rufus and Chaka Khan's "I'm a Woman." Payback may be sweet, but in her own beautifully twisted way, Joi shows that staying true to yourself is the best revenge.
Vibe
On Star Kitty's Revenge, the bad-ass Atlanta resident uses her dusky soprano to tell it like it is, musing on sexual freedom and emotional fulfillment against a backdrop of spare punk funk. Sun Singleton [4 stars]

    Plain & Simple... A Masterpiece

I enjoyed this album thouroughly. It's a wonderful example of how good music can fall on deaf ears. I highly recommend this disc, and I hope somehow, this CD will just get a second wind and become the best selling album of 2002. It's an extraordinary album.
