Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Elizabeth Fronk
Katie Woo steals the show in spite of a small part in her class play, "The Princess and the Frog." Katie's class is putting on the play and she wants to be the princess. Unfortunately she does not get that part; she gets the part of the "Worm." Her friends, Pedro and JoJo get the parts, "Frog" and "Princess." Katie gets some assistance from her parents to make the most of her part. On the day of the play, Katie is excited but cannot see much in her costume. In spite of this challenge, her best efforts result in some chaos among Katie's fellow students. She manages to get Pedro to kiss JoJo and almost steals the play's ending. At the book's end, a glossary page helps with words that may be challenging for beginning chapter book readers. Also included are writing suggestions and questions that a class could discuss. This episode in the Katie Woo series may appeal to male and female readers, but the book's cover centers on Katie being the star. However, fans of the series are probably more female than male. It is hard not to like Katie with her verve; Lyon's illustrations nicely capture Katie's vivacious personality. Part of the "Katie Woo" series. Reviewer: Elizabeth Fronk

Meet the Author

Fran Manushkin is the author of many popular picture books, including Baby, Come Out!; Latkes and Applesauce: A Hanukkah Story; The Tushy Book; The Belly Book; and Big Girl Panties. There is a real Katie Woo — she's Fran's great-niece — but she never gets in half the trouble of the Katie Woo in the books. Fran writes on her beloved Mac computerin New York City, without the help of her two naughty cats, Chaim and Goldy.

Tammie Lyon began her love for drawing at a young age while sitting at the kitchen table with her dad. She continued her love of art and eventually attended The Columbus College of Art and Design, where she earned a Bachelors degree in Fine Art. After a brief career as a professional ballet dancer, she decided to devote herself full time to illustration. Today she lives with her husband, Lee, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Her dogs, Gus and Dudley, keep her company as she works in her studio.
