Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
In this republication of our national anthem, readers are treated to the entire song rather than just the well-known first verse. Interestingly, the illustrations are lithographed on stone and several of them are done in color. Unfortunately, most of the illustrations are ethnocentrically oriented to the Caucasian race. However, they do promote a feeling of nationalism that, at the time of its original publication in 1942, was deemed important as the United States entered World War II. There are several depictions of soldiers, tanks and battlefields that stir feelings of pride and support for our nation and reflect on Francis Scott Key's interpretation of the battle he observed while composing the song. The illustrations progressively move through our country's history, starting with a scene of settlers building a log cabin and moving toward scenes depicting towns with factories. The endsheets of the book contain the musical notation for those interested in singing or playing the anthem. 1999 (orig.1942), Applewood Books, $14.95. Ages 3 up. Reviewer: Melissa A. Caudill
