Overview

The Taurus Reach is in turmoil.

With tensions mounting between the Federation and the Klingon Empire, Ambassador Jetanien works frantically on Starbase Vanguard to halt the escalation toward war. Commodore Diego Reyes, the station's former commander, awaits trial for treason, while the shattered mind of his intelligence officer, T'Prynn, becomes the battlefield in a fight for her very life.

But even as matters deteriorate, the discoveries made in the Taurus Reach have captured the imagination of one of the Federation's most promising scientific minds: Dr. Carol Marcus believes she is close to solving a puzzle that will transform her life's work. Meanwhile, an unexpected defection brings a new perspective to the investigation, and Vanguard's Lieutenant Ming Xiong is confronted with an artifact that could be the key to decoding the Taurus Meta-Genome.

But with Operation Vanguard teetering between its greatest breakthrough and a conflict that could engulf two quadrants, its future may depend on the man Starfleet has selected to replace Reyes as base commander: Admiral Heihachiro Nogura.

Not a total bore ... but not very exciting either

"What Judgments Come" is the penultimate volume in the Star Trek Vanguard series. It's neither the best nor the worst book in the series, and it's not (mostly) a bore, but it's not exactly packed with exciting events and revelations either. As usual with this series, it's a multi-threaded affair, where the threads include:

    * A Federation starship that stumbles upon the Tholians' test of a weapon on a Klingon colony ... and gets chased away at high warp for their troubles ...

    * A new attempt to communicate with captive Shedai that is partly successful ... before failing disastrously ...

    * The recruitment of former Commodore Diego Reyes to spy on his Orion captors ... while the Orions scheme about how to kill him ...

    * An effort to build a successful Planet of Galactic Peace, where citizens of the Federation, the Klingon Empire, and the Romulan Empire live together in harmony ... in the face of deceit and hostility ...

The bit concerning the Tholians is probably the most promising thread, and I say "promising" because it doesn't conclude in this book. The thread about the Planet of Galactic Peace -- the same place that Spock's half-brother Sybok conquers in "Star Trek V - The Final Frontier" -- comes out of left field and is a real snoozer that is only connected to the Vanguard series by the presence of Ambassador Jetanien.

All of these threads, most of which will be left dangling until the final volume ("Storming Heaven") arrives in March 2012, do not add up to a novel. They do, on the other hand, amount to a few mildly entertaining hours of reading. If you've been reading the series up to this point, you have every reason to read this one in preparation for the grand (if we're lucky) finale.

    A Terrific Series

I was never a huge fan of this time period. I have become a huge fan of this series though. There are a lot of characters and a lot of serperate plot lines for these characters. There are some old characters from movies or shows, but there are also a lot of fresh characters that make this an interesting story. The authors have done a good job keeping the story together and keeping it interesting.

A great read, to the Vanguard series

The book covers four different stories that provide insight into some of things that have happened throughout the series, as short stories. It's one of those books that helps answer some questions, tie up a few loose ends and give the reader more stories that you want.

My only regret is that the series is set to come to an end.

    I Also Recommend:

Great Addition to the Vanguard Series.

I have had alot of fun reading the off-shoots from the Star Trek novels, and the Vanguerd series has been one of the good ones. I look forward to the next one. Especially to see what T'Prin is up too..
