Overview

An all-new eBook exclusive adventure in the Taurus Reach with the starship crews, undercover agents, civilian colonists, and alien power players of the Vanguard saga, based on Star Trek: The Original Series.

Following the dramatic events as chronicled in Vanguard: Storming Heaven, the U.S.S. Enterprise and other starships that participated in the final battle in the Taurus Reach have been remanded to a remote starbase. While evacuees from the station are processed and the ships repaired, restocked, and re-staffed as needed, Captain James T. Kirk is ordered to report to Admiral Heihachiro Nogura, Starbase 47’s second and final commanding officer. Through flashbacks intercut with the ongoing conversation between Kirk and Nogura, the Enterprise’s involvement in the last days of Operation Vanguard—and the conflict between Starfleet and Tholian forces at Starbase 47—is now told from the perspective of Kirk and his crew.

I was never a huge fan of this time period. I have become a huge fan of this series though. There are a lot of characters and a lot of serperate plot lines for these characters. There are some old characters from movies or shows, but there are also a lot of fresh characters that make this an interesting story. The authors have done a good job keeping the story together and keeping it interesting.

"What Judgments Come" is the penultimate volume in the Star Trek Vanguard series. It's neither the best nor the worst book in the series, and it's not (mostly) a bore, but it's not exactly packed with exciting events and revelations either. As usual with this series, it's a multi-threaded affair, where the threads include: * A Federation starship that stumbles upon the Tholians' test of a weapon on a Klingon colony ... and gets chased away at high warp for their troubles ... * A new attempt to communicate with captive Shedai that is partly successful ... before failing disastrously ... * The recruitment of former Commodore Diego Reyes to spy on his Orion captors ... while the Orions scheme about how to kill him ... * An effort to build a successful Planet of Galactic Peace, where citizens of the Federation, the Klingon Empire, and the Romulan Empire live together in harmony ... in the face of deceit and hostility ... The bit concerning the Tholians is probably the most promising thread, and I say "promising" because it doesn't conclude in this book. The thread about the Planet of Galactic Peace -- the same place that Spock's half-brother Sybok conquers in "Star Trek V - The Final Frontier" -- comes out of left field and is a real snoozer that is only connected to the Vanguard series by the presence of Ambassador Jetanien. All of these threads, most of which will be left dangling until the final volume ("Storming Heaven") arrives in March 2012, do not add up to a novel. They do, on the other hand, amount to a few mildly entertaining hours of reading. If you've been reading the series up to this point, you have every reason to read this one in preparation for the grand (if we're lucky) finale.
