Under the command of James T. Kirk, the Starship Enterprise is able to mitigate some of the damage -- but the world's surface is still devastated with appalling loss of life. Over the next three decades, the Enterprise and its crew revisit Mestiko -- whether to keep them from falling prey to the machinations of the Klingon Empire or to deliver a new method of replenishing the planet's ozone -- through trials and tribulations, hardship and strife, love and death.
Originally published as six eBooks, Mere Anarchy is the saga of one crew's career-long relationship to one world, and the ties that bound them inextricably together.

I've always been intrigued by the Saavik character and thought she warranted more attention, and I've enjoyed everything I've ever ready by MWB, so I was really looking forward to this book about Saavik by MWB. And it was a great read. I liked learning more about Saavik's life both before and after her appearances in Star Treks II, III, and IV, and how all those experiences affected her. In addition, I thought that the strange, new world visited in this book was very cool and unique. I also liked Saavik's new CO, Captain Miranova. It was nice to read about Starfleet officers acting as explorers and diplomats again, and not just soldiers and spies. That having been said, this book did have an espionage/intrigue plot as well, and while that aspect of the plot was certainly necessary--since it is what brought Saavik's past into the story and provided insights into how she looks at the world--I still found it far less interesting than the exploration part of the plot. Overall, though, very good book. The author writes beautifully, and it's clear she understands and cares about her characters. If MWB were to write a follow-up book, continuing Saavik's story past the TOS-move-era (and maybe even her rise to that captaincy we see her in in some other novels), I would definately pick it up.

This was one of the first Star Trek novels I read (and I have since read all of the ST original series novels). I believe Paramount Pictures would have been better served to have used this novel for the basis of their movie 'ST: First Contact'. It presents the first Vulcan/Earth contact in a more entertaining and satisfying manner than that portrayed in the aforementioned movie. There is humor, pathos, action, intrigue, and many other qualities that all contribute to good literature. One that I've read on several occasions, and always find something that I missed on previous readings. This book is what Star Trek is all about. Definitely one of the best in this genre.

Probe is one of my all time favorite Star Trek books. I read it twice since I enjoyed the explanations given for the Probe that appeared in the movie. It was a good commentary as to why the Trek universe is always in danger of being destroyed, in that most species do not see beyond their own perspectives. Great stuff. I highly suggest this book to most fans.
