Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Judy Silverman
The Star Trek characters don't change very much. Jim (soon to be Captain) Kirk has been chasing girls since he was in high school and obviously doesn't see any reason to stop. Dr. McCoy generally doesn't participate in Jim's adventures, but he "covers Jim's back" as a good friend is expected to. We are finally told Uhura's first name—Nyota—and are given a look at her amazing talents and abilities. She can speak several Romulan dialects and is developing a relationship with the computer, introducing it to irony and sarcasm, which it is beginning to understand, and even praising it when it does something right, which it will never understand. Spock, of course, has always been the same logical half-Vulcan; Uhura has a crush on him, but he's her instructor, and she'll never give herself away. In the TV shows, there is usually one minor character that will die or be badly injured; in this book there are several, and of course Jim has fallen for one of them. The book reads like a TV show; in fact, the reader can almost picture the fadeouts and the jumps between rooms and characters. The plot is fairly typical (alien nanotechnology combined with a serial killer), and the characters still use some of the tools that we consider cutting edge (certainly after 200 years you would think there must be something new) but it doesn't interfere with our enjoyment of the book. It's a good read anyway. Reviewer: Judy Silverman
