Overview

Long before he took command of the Starship Enterprise™, Captain Jean-Luc Picard led another proud vessel through the uncharted regions of the galaxy: the U.S.S. Stargazer. Thrust unexpectedly into the center seat, the twenty-eight-year-old Picard must live up to the challenges of starship command -- and a crew that hasn't yet learned to trust him.
The pirate known as the White Wolf has been wreaking havoc across several sectors, and the inexperienced Picard has been given the assignment to stop him. Surprised at getting such a challenge, Picard soon learns that he is expected to fail in his duty and have his captaincy disgraced before it can even begin.
Given an untested crew and an impossible mission, Picard must beat the odds and apprehend the White Wolf -- but the pirate keeps a shocking secret that leaves Picard to make a deadly decision.

Great Book

This novel spent way too much time introducing characters and explaining articles which were already revealed in the previous novel "Valiant." The ending was horrible amd very anti climatic and very rushed. The is not the Picard that we know and surely the actions portrayed are not what military officer would do. The characters seem to act like high school sophmores. Further, Picard lets the bad guy go because ofnan excuse with no investigation, evidence, or strong reason. The criminal was a pirate, terrorist, and perhaps a murderer. Picard dismisses a crewman for lying but lets the pirate of horrible crimes go. Not a lesson to be emulated. By far, this is the worst star trek novel. This reads like a star wars novel for fifth graders.

MJ Friedman is maybe the most prolific Star Trek writer. Comparing to other SF writers his language is easy and smooth and highly pictographic. And this time he did it again! He simply captivated our hearts with a well plotted story that will snatch you away from the trivial. This is one of those books that doesn't let you leave it until you read it in one breath. But then there's a sequel: PROGENITOR. Wait until you lay hands on that one! I'm always inspired by Michael in my SF writing and audiobook production.

I've read Valiant, This, and the second stargazer book. Can wait till the 3rd one comes out. If you've ever watched and star trek the next gerneration shows, this is a must read, elling of Picards begining and where he gets his skill from, his former captain.
