Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sheilah Egan
Using clear photographs from the Star Wars films, this addition to the ABC genre has a single sentence accompanying each picture. The featured letter is shown in upper case with the letter's representation named beneath the "embossed" letter. The letter also appears in the sentence itself. Each capital letter has been created using some aspect of the photograph, for example the A page, which shows Anakin wielding his light saber, uses the laser light to make the lines of the letter. Boba Fett's "B" is made from the camouflage of his armor and helmet. ABC books often have to stretch for X, Y, and Z; but here we have the X-Wing spaceship "shaped like the letter X." "Yoda teaches young Jedi students." And "Zam" is a zigzagging shape-shifter." The bright, saturated colors in the detailed photographs will entice youngsters to revisit this title over and over. Fans will want to know what each letter represents and those new to Star Wars will be enticed to find out more about these interesting characters. Early readers will find reinforcement and have opportunities to tackle new vocabulary, such as the words "strives, galaxy, and legendary." This larger-than-usual board book will be welcomed by libraries needing additional material for the insatiable Star Wars fans. Reviewer: Sheilah Egan
