Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kathie M. Josephs
Darth Vader is still trying to locate the missing Imperial expeditionary force. However, the mission of the Imperial force is led by the son of his rival, Moff Tarkin. Darth Vader cannot focus fully on his search, still mourning the death of Padme. Soon, the mission becomes more dangerous than he expected. Some of his own men are found to be traitors and the religious leader called Lady Saro joins the mission. In the end, Vader is asked how he survived the mission; his answer makes complete sense. Blackman’s text and Leonardi’s fantastic illustrations leave the reader wanting the next book in the series. A short forward at the front of the book aids readers’ understanding of what was going on. Graphic novels are a great way to help a nonreader, or a reluctant reader, to read. The vocabulary is well chosen and the text does not seem to “talk down” to the reader. This male hero story is perfect for a home or school library. Reviewer: Kathie M. Josephs AGERANGE: Ages 9 up.
