Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Amy S. Hansen
Many students have to pick a science fair project. Many students are Star Wars fans. The hope here is that the overlap of these two sets is significant. The experiments in the book do not require a real lightsaber, or the ability to jump to hyperspace. Rather, they look at the science part of the science fiction, and ask the reader to unravel how it was done. For example, Luke's family lives on a desert planet. Among the experiments about desert life is one where students are asked to design a model desert in an aquarium and then see if they can collect water. In another look at desert living, readers can model walking through desert sands to note how the movement might be different than it is on hard rock. While these recipe-book explorations are interesting, age appropriate, and not terribly expensive, the book is overselling itself as far as being a science fair book. The introduction suggests readers write out their hypothesis, this is good, but it is the only the first step of the science fair process. Where is the discussion of independent and dependent variables? Where is the actual data collected? Where is a suggestion of multiple trials and averaging the results? Margles would not have had to write out all of these pieces for every experiment, but doing it once would have made this book much more useable for a science fair neophyte. As it is, Star Wars enthusiasts will look through the book, enjoy the pictures from the movies, and maybe pick a project, but they will still need a lot of help setting up. Back matter includes an index. Reviewer: Amy S. Hansen
