Simplified ... but True to the Movies

I gave the boxed set to my grandson, a seven year old second grade student, as a Christmas gift. They're actually aimed at a slightly higher grade level but I knew that in first grade he'd tested at a higher reading level and I hoped that he was continuing the trend. It seems that he remains an above-average reader and is able to wade through the books, albeit not without some challenges. Therefore, I've picked his brain to write this review.

In general, the 9-12 recommended age range for readers is probably accurate. The non-specialized vocabulary should be no problem for children in fourth grade and only a marginal issue for those in grade three. The challenge comes from George Lucas, who invented such a rich range of person, place, and creature names. Even those at the upper end of the suggested age for readers may trip over a few of them; my daughter says that she and her husband occasionally need to slowly sound out a character's name before helping the grandson with pronunciation.

Older children might be bored with the simple sentence structure and the like. For them, a more challenging novelization would be in order. At the lower age range, 9 is close to the target for beginning to read the novelizations. If the child can read on the upper end of the average for grade three, the read may start slowly but will pick up steam as reading ability improves. Knowing the movies is a plus, since much of the vocabulary already rings in the reader's head.

In summary, I recommend this series for those intermediate readers who aren't bored by the subject matter, especially those already familiar with the six films on which the books are based.

    Star Wars

I got this series because my son loves Star Wars. He finished the set quite quickly as I thought he might, but he still enjoyed reading them.

    Chapter Books

My son loves these books. If your child loves Star Wars, these chapter books are great. He has read and re-read them several times.
