Children's Literature - Lauri Berkenkamp
The five clone troop trainees of Domino Squad have a long road ahead of them if they hope to become part of the elite ARC trooper units defending the Republic. They are a disorganized group, and are tested again and again before they graduate from cadet training and become rookie soldiers. The squad is assigned to the barren Rishi moon outpost, where they are charged with watching for enemy spacecraft. When a stealth droid ship lands on Rishi and attacks the squad, the team loses three of its members, but the two remaining clones vow to avenge their fallen comrades. The clone fighters manage to blow up the overrun outpost, alerting the Republic army to the assault and thwarting the droid incursion. News of the clones' sacrifice reaches Obi Wan Kenobi, and he recruits the remaining clones for his elite 501st unit. After a decisive battle where the clones of Domino Squad show their true fighting spirit, they are finally promoted to ARC troopers, fulfilling their destiny. This novel, based on the Star Wars Clone Wars television series, is presented in media res, offering no backstory or context for the action that occurs. The characters are wooden and interchangeable, and the storyline itself is simply a series of battles interspersed with dialogue that is so poorly written it is difficult to determine who is saying what. Unless readers are already familiar with the series and characters, it's likely not much of the book will make sense. This is fan fiction at its most myopic, and will likely appeal to die-hard fans only. Reviewer: Lauri Berkenkamp
