Gr 9 Up—Dominy Robineau, a teen cursed to change into werewolf, struggles to save her friends in this conclusion to the paranormal romance with roots in the "Little Red Riding Hood" tale.
VOYA, June 2014 (Vol. 37, No. 2) - Meghann Meeusen
Dominy Robineau has only just begun to acclimate to her new life as a werewolf, but the challenges she has to face are far from over. Still hunted by local police, Dominy must rely on her wolf pack friends more than ever, yet nothing about her life is simple. Jess and Nap offer warnings and hope from beyond the grave, but Nadine’s ominous pregnancy, the arrival of the mysterious and beautiful Vera, and strange behavior from Archie make everyone question what is on the horizon. While Dominy struggles to understand her dual nature as girl and wolf, she also grows closer than ever to Caleb, all while preparing for what might prove to be the greatest battle she has ever faced. The third novel in the Darkborn Legacy series will not disappoint fans of this chaotic world of mythology, witches, and werewolves. Dominy is as remarkable as ever, and those familiar with her story will be mesmerized by both the nonstop action and her internal battles. The text’s distinctive use of descriptive detail and humor will likely keep some readers engaged, but unfortunately these elements also occasionally limit the story’s meaning and character development, resulting in stereotypical characterization and sometimes even disrespectful cultural depictions. Nonetheless, Starfall hosts an interesting cast of characters and certainly brings something unique to teen paranormal fiction. Reviewer: Meghann Meeusen; Ages 15 to 18.
