K-Gr 2-- Ray takes readers along with a young girl and her mother as they watch a star shower. The child is excited just to be up so long past her bedtime. The first-person narration adds immediacy to the adventure, as the two arrive at just the right spot, spread their blanket, and look up. ``A million stars dance over us in the silver, dusty sky.'' They find the Big Dipper and the planets Mars and Venus. As they wait , they make a snuggle sack and cuddle close. Finally, the shower of shooting stars begins. When it is over, they fold their blanket and slowly walk home. A note at the end explains that the Perseid meteor shower peaks in mid-August. Ray provides a poetic text accompanied by spreads that capture the vastness of the night sky.
